Syllabus Course: Geometry Academic Year 2009-2010 Instructor Information: • Room - 226 • Email - ejablonska@cps.edu • Voice Mailbox # 29781 • Office hours - 3rd and 7th period available Text Books: Mathematics With Meaning: Geometry (Springboard), Informal Geometry Required Materials: pen, pencils, notebook, calculator Recommended Materials: folder or binder (for returned work) Course Outline/Syllabus 2009-2010 Course Title and Description Geometry: This course focuses on inductive and deductive reasoning, geometric constructions and applications of geometric principals. Students will be asked to think logically, read with understanding, and express mathematical ideas orally and in writing. Course Purpose Geometry is included in the high school curriculum in order to teach students the benefits and methodologies of clear thinking, as well as the properties of various geometric shapes. Through the use of logic, geometric concepts, and algebraic problem solving techniques, students will be exposed to the operational methodologies of critical thinking skills. Grading Policy Letter grades will be based on the following percentages: A 92 - 100% B 84 - 91% C 76 - 83% D 68 - 75% F 67% or below Grading modifications may be made at the teacher’s discretion. (Spec. Ed. - IEP) Evaluation and Return of Student Assignments Homework will be assigned on a daily basis. In addition, there will also be several projects and activities assigned throughout the year. Class time will be allotted for the completion of these projects, and grading for these projects will include group presentations, written work and group participation. Project due dates will be assigned accordingly. All work will be graded and returned in a timely fashion. Late Assignment Acceptance Policy Late homework will not be accepted. Completion of daily assignments is essential for success in this class. If a student is absent with a valid excuse, the work will be collected upon their return to school. Attendance Policy Attendance is important for success in this class, and students are expected to be in class every day. Unexcused absences will result in a zero for the day, as well as a zero on any homework, tests or quizzes administered that day. All fieldtrips and student activities (sports, rehearsals, clubs, etc.) that result in missed class time must be cleared by the teacher before the expected date of absence. Any students who miss 18 unexcused days in a semester will fail. Also, excessive absences (excused or unexcused) will affect the student’s grade. Course Timeline and Assignment Sheet First Quarter: Basics of Geometry, Reasoning and Proof, Perpendicular and Parallel Lines Second Quarter: Congruent Triangles, Properties of Triangles, Quadrilaterals Third Quarter: Transformations, Similarity, Right Triangles and Trigonometry Fourth Quarter: Circles, Area of Polygons and Circles, Surface Area and Volume Learning Outcomes Students will be able to: • Collect, organize and present geometric concepts • Compute solutions to problems through the use of geometric concepts • Use Algebra to solve various geometric problems • Use theorems and concepts to determine new knowledge • Comprehend geometric concepts and proofs Respect for your teachers, fellow students, and yourself, in addition to doing all of your homework will almost guarantee that you will pass this class.
